hint sunscreen FAQ

Karin -

Is hint® sunscreen a sunscreen or sunblock?
We make our products using sunscreens - ingredients that protect your skin by actively absorbing UV rays. Our products do not contain sunblocks, such as zinc or titanium, which passively reflect sunlight. We do not use sunblocks because we don’t like the strong earthy scent of them, the whitish appearance they can cause on our skin or the irritation that some people find with mineral sunblocks.

Does hint® sunscreen provide UVA and UVB protection?
Yes.

Does hint® sunscreen have parabens?
No. Our products are paraben free.

Does hint® sunscreen have oxybenzone?
No. Our products are oxybenzone free.

Is hint® sunscreen water resistant?
Yes. It is water resistant up to 80 minutes.

What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. it is the standard that indicates how much sun protection a sunscreen contains.

Why SPF 30 and not higher?
Experts continue to debate whether sunscreens with SPF higher than 30 offer significantly more protection, but there is widespread agreement that reapplying sunscreen frequently makes a dramatic difference in the level of protection you receive. We recommend reapplying at least every 80 minutes while enjoying the sun, but with the amazing aroma of hint® sunscreen you may end up wanting to reapply more often!

How often and when should I reapply hint® sunscreen?
The American Cancer Society advises that sunscreen be applied early, regularly, and generously. To give the skin time to absorb sunscreen, ACS advises applying it 30 minutes before going outside. Since sunscreen is broken down over time by the sun, it should be reapplied at least every two hours.

We advise that hint® sunscreen be reapplied after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying since all of these activities can remove sunscreen.

Is hint® sunscreen safe for use on children?
hint® sunscreen is FDA approved for use on children and adults over 6 months old. Many brands market one formula for adults and the same formula for kids but with different branding. We think that putting the same formula in different packages is just silly.

Is the hint® sunscreen bottle aerosol?
Our continuous spray products are considered an aerosol although the sunscreen is not mixed with any propellants like traditional aerosols. Our sunscreen is protected inside a special bag which is under pressure from compressed air in the bottom of the can.  When you press your finger down on the valve at the top of the can, you are allowing the sunscreen out through the valve as a convenient spray.  This type of dispenser is called “bag on valve” or BOV.

Is hint® sunscreen tested on animals?
No.

Can I spray hint sunscreen on my face?
It is safe for use on the entire body. For the face, we suggest spraying some on your hands and then rubbing it on your face, avoiding your eyes.

hint® sunscreen is non-comedogenic.

Can hint® sunscreen be used over make-up?

Is hint® sunscreen “reef safe?"
There is no FDA-approved sunscreen that is considered fully safe for contact with underwater ocean reefs, so you should not apply it immediately before diving near reefs.  Micronized mineral sunblocks (the ones that don’t make your skin white) are also not considered fully reef safe.  Non-micronized mineral sunscreens (the ones that do make your skin white and generally do not smell great) are generally considered reef safe, but they don’t meet many of our customers' needs.  We have developed an alternate formulation that is considered reef-safe, but are awaiting FDA approval of the ingredients. If you feel strongly about this issue, please write to the FDA and ask them to expedite review of reef-safe sunscreen ingredients. You might also wish to ask your Senators and Representatives to encourage the FDA to expedite review of these ingredients.

hint® sunscreen is flammable, so do not store at temperatures above 120° F. hint® sunscreen should be stored in a cool place, since heat can gradually break it down.

How do you remove hint® sunscreen?
Our sunscreen should wash off with a bit of warm soapy water—and elbow grease!

Is hint® sunscreen recyclable?
Although all the individual components are recyclable, whether the container can be recycled in your area depends on your local recycling company's capabilities. this is because the can, even with no product in it, still has some pressure (although a small amount). Some recycling facilities can handle this and some can’t. Contact your local recycling company to learn local requirements. The can will have between 20-30 psi even without product in it.

Does hint® sunscreen contain allergens?
Although our products do not contain any "class 1" allergens (such as soy, peanuts, nuts, shellfish), it is impossible to make an allergy-free product. this product contains natural fragrances, and some people can be allergic to fragrance. As with any product, if you’re worried about allergic reactions, test the product on a small area first and/or consult a physician before applying over larger areas.
